Title:                       Public Works Water/Wastewater Tech I
Pay Grade:            Hourly
Classification:      Regular, Full-time, non-exempt   
Department:         Public Works (water, sewer, streets, and parks)
Starting Pay:         $17.00/hour

 

Job Summary

Performs and assists in the operation and maintenance/repair of streets, parks, city properties, stormwater, wastewater collections, and water systems. Works 40 hours per week with a schedule as dictated by the needs of the job. Often involves holidays and weekends. Subject to emergency call-outs.

 

Summary of Essential Job Functions

  • Performs a variety of routine unskilled to semi-skilled manual labor and maintenance work required to maintain the general appearance of the city
  • Operates a variety of tools and some equipment to assist with the repair and maintenance of streets, storm drainage systems, parks, water, and sewer systems
  • Performs maintenance, or replacement of traffic signs and street markings
  • May provide some training to less experienced maintenance or seasonal staff 
  • Provides traffic control for work taking place on the right-of-way, setting up and removing signage, cones, barricades, etc.  
  • Provide support for special events, festivals, parades, etc.
  • Performs maintenance on equipment and tools, reports damage or maintenance needs to the maintenance supervisor 
  • Attend safety meetings 
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Support other departments as needed
  • On a rotating basis to be available to answer and respond to after-hours trouble calls
  • May be subject to emergency call-outs during non-working hours

 

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License
  • Class D water/wastewater license 
  • Ability to learn to operate a backhoe, sewer machine, and various other equipment  
  • Must have or be willing to obtain a Hepatitis A vaccination  

 

Abilities Required

The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Ability to see and hear; communicate in the English language; carry items weighing up to 80 pounds and lift to a height of 3-5 feet; walk, stand and kneel for extended periods of time; push and pull up to 200 pounds; climb ladders; perform heavy manual labor in conditions of extreme heat and cold, and in the presence of extreme noise, dust, filth, and possible mechanical or chemical hazards as well as traffic hazards; operate equipment including mowers, trimmers, edger’s and other construction equipment; drive in a safe and responsible manner; must have the ability to obtain, and maintain TCEQ required licenses for water and wastewater operations, follow oral and written instructions, and cross-train in other departments as needed; must be able to develop and maintain a positive working relationship with fellow employees and the general public.
